Electrical Safety Tips

Electricity makes the world go around—and makes the world we live in much more convenient. But electricity is dangerous when not handled correctly. 3D Plumbing, Electric, Heating & Air have electrical safety tips for you to stay safe in your home.

Electrical Safety Tips

  • Be aware of electricity! This may seem like an obvious safety tip, but often people forget to unplug or turn off breakers for an appliance they are working on, or a light they are installing. The first step is to unplug or shut off your electrical supply.
  • Use the right bulbs for the right light fixtures. Pay attention to the wattage listed on the lamp or light fixture and never exceed the number listed with your bulbs. In addition, use lampshades to avoid bare bulbs which could touch drapery or other materials and catch fire.
  • Don't overload outlets. Your outlets are made to supply a certain amount of electricity and when you plug in extension cords or multiple appliances that use heat, you are in danger of overloading the outlet and starting a fire. Remember as a kid, when you were warned about creating an "octopus" with your outlets? This is sound advice at any age!
  • Don't use damaged or frayed extension cords or appliances. This includes cell phone cords. If your extension cord is damaged, stop using it immediately and replace it. Apply the same logic to your appliances as well. Damaged cords can spark fires and cause shocks.
  • Don't run any cords under rugs or carpets. This is not only a tripping hazard but can also cause a fire. If you find yourself running extension cords, you may need to consider having an electrician install extra outlets.
