“3D Electric has been great. We have had them do a lot of electrical work on our newly-purchased house and they have done a great job. We recently had some power issues in our kitchen and they came out the same day and restored power in 15 minutes.

Great value too, all the work we've had done has cost us less than we expected. Highly recommend them!”

When Should I Replace my Electrical Panel?

  1. It’s Old.

An electrical panel is one of the things in your home that lasts a very long time, even longer than a furnace or a water heater. You can expect a good electrical panel that was professionally installed to last anywhere from 25-40 years.

  1. New Appliances were Installed

If you had new appliances installed in your home, there is a chance that your electrical panel will need to be upgraded. Newer appliances often require more electricity to work. An electrical panel designed for devices made in the 80s and 90s may not be sufficient to deliver the power needed for more modern appliances.

A clear sign that your electrical panel cannot handle all the appliances you have in your home is if the circuit breakers keep tripping. If you find yourself having to reset the breaker over and over again, that is a good indication that it is time for an electrical panel upgrade.

  1. You Have a Federal Pacific Electric Panel (FPE)

As many Wichita residents of older homes have experienced, having an electrical panel from the Federal Pacific Electric Company can be quite a problem. This was the common electrical panel installed across the United States from the 1950s to the 80s. Over the years, experts realized these systems were flawed and failed to provide proper protection to homeowners. While they can work fine for many, many years, one short circuit or other problem can cause the system to dangerously overheat, putting your home at risk for a fire.

Federal Pacific Electric panels have been found to fail 60% of the time there was a power surge. Typically, circuit breakers will trip to cut off the electricity to prevent a fire. But the Federal Pacific breakers did not cut off the power, causing the panel to overheat and sometimes causing a fire.

You don’t have to wait until there is a problem to get your electrical panel replaced. Many homeowners with Federal Pacific breakers choose to be proactive in upgrading their system to a modern, safe electrical panel. While the old panel may continue to work for many years to come, the risk of a potential fire hazard from these old panels is not a risk many people want to take.

Do you have a Federal Pacific breaker box? The easiest way to know for sure is to check the cover on the breaker box. You will see a label with either Federal Pacific or FPE printed on it. You can also open the cover to see if it was printed on the inside.

The breakers inside usually have a red stripe on the switch.

When in doubt, call 3D out! We will be happy to send one of our Wichita electricians out to your home and inspect your electrical panel. If you have a problematic Federal Pacific panel or an older panel, we can provide you with the information on what sort of upgrade is needed to handle your home and your family’s electrical needs.

Homeowner Electrical Panel Maintenance

Just like many systems in your house, your electrical panel is something that needs occasional checks and maintenance. While an electrician should be called out to handle repairs, there are a few regular checks a homeowner can do to help ensure the home’s breaker box is in proper shape.

A homeowner should check their electrical panel occasionally for signs of rust or burn. These signs would indicate a possible serious problem. Call for a professional electrician to come out and inspect your circuit breaker panel and entire electrical system for damage or potential dangers for an electrical fire.
